Czech people had their own state already at the end of the 9th century. It was the part of medieval Holy Roman Empire, extended also on the territory of the today´s Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Switzerland, Belgium, Holland, Luxemburg, and part of France, Italy and Poland. Prague – one of the most beautiful cities in the world – has always been the capital of the country. Twice – in the second half of the 14th century (Charles IV (1316 – 1378), King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor) and at the turn of the 16th and 17th century – it was the capital of the entire empire.
Not only Prague, but also other Czech and Moravian towns are rich in unique historical monuments: from Romanesque and Gothic style, through Renaissance and Baroque, up to late 19th century decorative style, Cubism and modern trends of the 20th century. Czech composers Antonín Dvořák, Bedřich Smetana and Leoš Janáček, writers Karel Čapek, Jaroslav Hašek and Milan Kundera, painters Alfons Mucha and František Kupka, film producer Miloš Forman, sportsmen Jaromir Jagr, Ivan Lendl or popular singer Karel Gott are well known worldwide. Writer Franz Kafka, composer Gustav Mahler, psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud or car designer Ferdinand Porsche were born and lived in Bohemia, being a part of German or Jewish community.
